Cromer BBQs Play of the Day - Counsell and Wyllie October 20 2012
An observant bystander may have noted that the BBQs’ 158 against Manly Leagues in Round 3 was a significantly below-par performance, on what was a hot day at their home ground and against a fairly modest bowling attack.
And indeed, Cromer considered the score to be defendable, yet far from ideal. The team hadn’t, however, factored in the possibility that their opening bowlers would simultaneously fire-up in the same innings for the first time in their three-year acquaintance on the cricket field.
After taking their score to 21 for just the loss of one wicket, Leagues’ brief resistance to Cromer’s fast bowling onslaught came to an abrupt halt. In a total of just 22 hostile overs, Michael Counsell and Andrew Wyllie combined to blaze through the entire Leagues Club line-up for the miserly total of just 70 runs.
Michael, who finished with 5/44, was desperately unlucky not to have finished with 6 or 7 victims, after ‘claiming’ what would have been the 9th wicket of the innings with a no-ball. His partner-in-crime Andrew was able to capitalise on the batsman’s reprieve, and snared the last two wickets himself to finish with an impressive 5/24 while securing a first innings win for Cromer before stumps on Day 1.
